Three piles
Any education aid offer can be sorted into gifts, earned and borrowed. Do that first, then read the details.
Gifts
Grants and scholarships
Generally not repaid when program rules are met. Each comes with conditions such as enrollment level, grades or a yearly form.
Who gives them: governments, schools, nonprofits. Where to check: studentaid.gov, your state agency, your school’s aid office.
Earned
Work-study
Not credited up front. You are paid for hours you work in a part-time job, and the pay helps with costs.
Who runs it: schools, through a funded program. Where to check: your school’s aid office or student employment office.
Borrowed
Loans
Money you repay, usually with interest. Accepting a loan is a decision, so read the terms first.
Who lends: governments and private lenders. Where to check: the lender’s terms, and studentaid.gov for federal loans.
